Acts of god
2019
Pavillion of Mexico, Arsenale, 58th Venice Biennial. Laboratorio Arte Alameda, Mexico City. Music by Juan Cristóbal Cerrillo and Ramón del Buey.
Shot in the Cuatrociénegas Biosphere Reserve in Coahuila, Mexico, home to some of the most ancient microbial species living on Earth, Acts of god is a video installation based on the premise of filming a number of scenes from the gospels, gathering all the blunders and accidents that happen through a shooting process, and using the errors in the scenes rather than the script as the guide for the editing process. The presence of the ancient landscape– a place that could be described as a microbial Eden– and its otherworldly features contradicts the prophetic musings of the characters at every turn, and their obsession with their place in creation and the fulfillment of god's will. The result is an ambiguous and open ended multi channel installation where the narrative of salvation is led astray by a series of mix ups and mistaken identities.
