MS 1131
2014
Ink on paper, 130x110 cm
The Maya vase known as MS1131 in the Maya Survey classification is a funerary urn adorned with a gorgeous series of glyphs. To the discerning eye there is something amiss in them, as they face the wrong direction for a Maya glyph. The reason for this is that they are a prayer meant to be read by creatures of the underworld, where everything is inverted. In this series of drawings, the lines that form the glyphs of the vase have been cut out and projected outwards from the perimeter of the vessel, suggesting an alternate reading from the beings faced with pleads coming from the world of the living.
