ATLAS
2018
Museo Universitario del Chopo, Ciudad de México
Sound design by Juan Cristóbal Cerrillo.
Atlas is a video based on a sequence from Stanley Kubrick’s 2001 Space Oddissey. What in Kubrick’s film is a hallucinatory parade of abstract imagery, landscapes and cosmic references, in Atlas is a close up view of the wings of a collection of butterflies, animated through a series of processes very similar to the ones used for the original film. And while in the film these visions are the result of an encounter with a superior intelligence, in Atlas they are the product of the close observation of natural patterns and phenomena, offering us the butterfly wing as a shorthand for evolution of life in the universe.
