ECLIPSES FOR SHANGHAI
2018
Music by Juan Cristobal Cerrillo and Ramón del Buey. Performed by the Datong High School Orchestra, Shanghai.
Work comissiones by the 12th Shanghai Biennial.
The Eclipses series is meant to be carried out in different locations, emphasizing its attachment to each site without resorting to physical or historical landmarks, but rather adopting it as a point from which to observe the heavens. The perceived transit of the moon in front of the disc of the sun over the course of the next thousand years – a phenomenon visible very sporadically only at certain latitudes, and for a very short amount of time – is the pretext for a commemoration of the future, featuring hundreds of people who represent the eclipses by means of an animated card stunt. The fourth installment of this series took place inside the chimney of a former power plant which is now the Power Plant of Art in Shanghai, where the eclipses of 2309 and 2635 were represented.
